How to Play Traditional Rummy
How to play traditional rummy? Like all the variants of rummy, it is a very easy and and interesting game. Since this game belongs to the rummy family, almost all of the standard rules apply and there are only a few differences which we will point out below.
Each game starts with a deck of cards evenly distributed to players of 10 cards each for 2 players and 7 cards each for 3 to 4 players.
In disposing their cards to the discard pile and melds pile, each player is obligated to discard a card after taking one card from stock pile. There are 3 ways to get rid of your cards. Either you lay off cards, you create a meld and place it in the melding pile, or you discard unwanted cards.
So that’s it, plain and simple rules on how to play traditional rummy! In scoring however, there is a big difference with gin, just in case you guys are wondering. Scores are tallied based on a players card, either a complete meld or simply a deadwood. Face cards are counted as 10 and aces as 1 point. The rest of the cards are counted according to their designated numbering respectively.
Since the object of the game is to be the first player to discard all cards on his hand, the player who are still holding cards tallies up the the points of those cards and is added to the winner of that certain round.
So to answer your question as to what are the major differences of gin compared to traditional rummy, well the answer is crystal clear. The two main differences lies in the scoring(gin only counts deadwood) and determining the winner (in gin, player declares himself gin and does not have to wait for 1 remaining card left in his hand). Although, also done in rummy for the objective of getting high scores.
