Deck: Composed of 52 Cards

Number of Players: 2 players only

Card Points: Ace is valued at 1 point; J, Q, K at 10 points each and the rest of the cards score at their face value.

Number of cards distributed: 10 each

Game Objective: The object of gin rummy is to create “melds”, (three or four cards of the same value or runs in sequence) to get rid of deadwood. A deadwood card in rummy is an unmatched card that is not part of a set or run. A player’s turn is composed of a draw and a discard.

Knocking: One of the exciting actions in gin rummy rules. This is an option of finishing the game when you have 10 or less deadwood in hand. As soon as a player knocks, the opponent has the opportunity to put his cards face-up and also lay off any unmatched cards to the knocker’s cards. Another “forced finish”” of the game is when there are 2 cards left and the player taking the 3rd last card discards and fails to knock. In this instance, it is a cancelled game without a winner.

Going Gin: This is when a player creates a perfect meld with no unmatched cards. By doing so, the player earns bonus points.
