- Drawing – Keeping your cards secret can be the best strategy there is. One way of doing this is through drawing cards from the stock pile instead of the discard pile. This actually applies to all rummy variations.
- Keep track of the cards you discard – throw away cards that are not needed by your opponent. Your top priority is to eliminate unmatched cards with the purpose of also discarding a card that the other player does not need.
- Pay attention – In order to win at Kalooki 40 you must concentrate fully on the cards your opponent discards to give you a heads-up of the cards he is keeping.
- Create melds of high value cards – One strategy that needs to be pursued as well is to form melds from your high cards so that you can reach 40 or more in your card count.
- Building cards – In adding to melds already displayed on the table, be careful not to toss cards that your opponent can match from the cards he is holding. This will eliminate his deadwood and adds more probability of winning.
- Melding – Follow another melding strategy that most pros would always do – draw and discard cards that will give you more opportunity to complete sets and runs. Say for example you have the following cards: six of hearts, six of clubs, seven of clubs and four of diamonds (6, 6, 7, 4). Discard four of diamonds to give you more opportunity to get another 6, or 8 of clubs. The sequence of 6, 7, 8 can possibly be formed, in case you don’t get a 6 to complete your set.
- Going down – Do this as soon as possible if all the other players has laid down, sometimes it’s too risky to wait for going Kalooki.
- Going Kalooki – The key factor is to pay attention of your opponents draw and discards. Surprise and penalize is the object of going Kalooki!
