What is a meld and how do I create it?

In creating melds in rummy which is optional, cards may be discarded by placing approved combinations of three or more cards face up in the designated meld area on the table. But, you may also choose to keep your melds in your hands in order to earn a bonus or as part of your strategy to win. The combination can be runs or sets.

Melds are created through arranging sets and sequences or runs.

It will also depend on the kind of variation a group is playing. However, general rules apply. Like for example, a set is composed of cards of the same rank, though different it suit. An example of a valid set is: 7 7 7 7.

Runs on the other hand are cards of the same suit, and a player should arrange it in a number of sequence. A valid run would be: 2 3 4, or 10 J Q K.

Like any other card games that sets and runs are created in order to win, rummy works the same. Only the set of rules differ and depending on the variants a group of family or friends are playing.
